Like every year, the holiday season has arrived: one moment, it’s summer, and the next, it’s Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

But today, I don’t want to talk about Thanksgiving or the New Year’s Eve parties. Today I want to talk to you about a wonderful initiative that we should all join: Giving Tuesday.

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

Giving Tuesday

It is celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and on this date, many people, individuals, and companies join the campaign by choosing one or more associations to offer resources, donations, and services.

For us, at Eatsperience Madrid, it is important to try to give as much as we can, because we know that we enjoy many privileges and we also want to use them to help those who have less!

Chefugee is a passion project run by an international team of volunteers. Our mission is to provide talented refugee, and asylum seeker cooks opportunities to share their culture and earn decent wages through their culinary skills.

Chefugee is an association headquartered in Madrid, Spain.

They collaborate closely with refugees and asylum seekers from all over the world to organize culinary events where they are the chefs – from pop-up dinners and lunches to caterings, team building activities, and cooking classes.

chefugee food is refuge

Back in April 2016, they started as a small ragtag group of volunteers organizing our first pop-up dinner in an apartment, together with a refugee chef from Syria. The culinary project grew from small dinners among friends every other month to popular regular events attended by guests from around the globe.

The proceeds of all our events are donated directly to the refugee and asylum seeker cooks whom we cooperate with and to building a future Chefugee fund that aims to support refugee small businesses and enterprises. So far, they have worked together with refugee and asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, and Venezuela.

Andrea and I love Chefugee! We first knew about them two years ago, we signed up for one of their dinners, and it was AWESOME! We loved the food, the soul, their scope. So, Andrea joined the group of volunteers and started helping in the organization of dinners and cooking classes.

Everybody worked so hard, and they could see the results: some of the Chefugees could open their own culinary businesses: REFUSION.

Refusion Delivery is a social initiative that seeks to promote the entrepreneurial spirit of refugee chefs using food as a universal language. Refusion Delivery seeks to be the first food delivery business in Spain in which the protagonists are refugees and where the different cultures, customs, and traditions of their countries of origin can be made known through the kitchen. The project is inspired by the Chefugee events and the work of Madrid for Refugees with refugees.

Chefugee has a special place in our hearts, and we want them to overcome this hard year that we have lived, and that hit too hard on a project like theirs. This is why we wanted Chefugee to be our partner for this Giving Tuesday 2020. And we need your help!

Of course, we want to thank you in advance for helping us: we’ll give you a free online cooking class!
